Daily Bible Verse - 6/28/2007 - Proverbs 4:24

Put away perversity from your mouth;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
(NIV)

Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
(KJV)

Put away from you a deceitful mouth
And put devious speech far from you.
(NASB)

Proverbs 4:24

Did you know?
Telling lies was called "flattering lips" (Ps. 12:2) or "lying lips" (Ps. 31:18). On the other hand, the Bible mentions "joyful lips" (Ps. 63:5) and "righteous lips" (Prov. 16:13), or speech that honors and glorifies God.

Daily Bible Verse - 6/27/2007 - 1 Peter 1:15-16

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." (NIV)

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. (KJV)

but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."
(NASB)

1 Peter 1:15-16

Commentary

Holiness essentially defines the Christian's new nature and conduct in contrast with his pre-salvation lifestyle. The reason for practicing a holy manner of living is that Christians are associated with the holy God and must treat Him and His Word with respect and reverence. We therefore glorify Him best by being like Him (see vv. 16,17; Matt. 5:48; Eph. 5:1; cf. Lev. 11:44,45; 18:30; 19:2; 20:7; 21:6-8).

The Hebrew word for "holy" denotes that which is "sanctified" or "set apart" for divine service.

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. (NIV)

For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
(KJV)

Deuteronomy 7:6

Commentary

God had chosen Israel to be a people who were separated to Himself. He did not want them to be like the other nations. He did not choose them because of their superior numbers (they were the fewest of all peoples). He chose them simply because He loved them, and He wanted them to obey Him in all things. A thousand generations means forever. The Lord hated the Canaanite nations because of their evil deeds. He loved the nation of Israel not because of any good but simply because He loved them and would keep the oath which He swore to their forefathers. Who can understand the electing grace of a sovereign God!

MacDonald, William ; Farstad, Arthur: Believer's Bible Commentary : Old and New Testaments. Nashville : Thomas Nelson, 1997, c1995, S. Dt 7:6

Background

DEUTERONOMY 7

Israel had experienced the wrath of God when they allowed themselves to be seduced by the Moabites (Num. 25). Now they were entering a land where they would be surrounded by pagan worship. There could be no compromise. If the nation were defiled by the awful sins of the Canaanites, it would jeopardize the fulfilling of God's promise of the Savior. Israel had to be a separated people if they were to bless the whole world (Gen. 12:1-3).

Moses gives us some motives for personal obedience. To begin with, God has commanded us (vv. 1-5), and we belong to Him (vv. 6-8). He is faithful (vv. 9-11); what He promises, He will fulfill (vv. 12-26).

Believers today must maintain a separated position (2 Cor. 6:14-18; 1 John 2:15-17) while at the same time loving the lost and seeking to win them to Christ. How do we demolish the strongholds of the enemy? Read 2 Corinthians 10:1-6 and Ephesians 6:10-20.

Daily Bible Verse - 6/24/2007 - Hebrews 3:6

But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.(NIV)

But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
(KJV)

but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house--whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
(NASB)

Hebrews 3:6

Commentary

Here the writer explains what is meant by God's house today. It is composed of all true believers in the Lord Jesus: whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. At first this might seem to imply that our salvation is dependent on our holding fast. In that case, salvation would be by our endurance rather than by Christ's finished work on the cross. The true meaning is that we prove we are God's house if we hold fast. Endurance is a proof of reality. Those who lose confidence in Christ and in His promises and return to rituals and ceremonies show that they were never born again. It is against such apostasy that the following warning is directed.

Commentary

Worry about the future is not only a dishonor to God-it is also futile.
MacDonald, William ; Farstad, Arthur: Believer's Bible Commentary : Old and New Testaments. Nashville : Thomas Nelson, 1997, c1995, S. Mt 6:27

Don't Worry!

Jesus condemned worry, not work (Matt. 6:25, 27-28, 31, 34). He never told us to stop working. Rather, He called us to correctly focus our faith on God, the ultimate supplier of our needs (Matt. 6:32).

Certainly we need to pay attention to our physical and material needs. But Jesus urged us to stop worrying about things so that they dominate our lives and values. We can't do that and serve God at the same time (Matt. 6:24). Instead, we need to redirect our focus onto God's kingdom and righteousness (Matt. 6:33).

Commentary

The ant is an example of industry, diligence, and planning (vv. 7, 8) and serves as a rebuke to a sluggard (a lazy one who lacks self control). Folly sends a lazy man to learn from an ant (see 10:4, 26; 12:24; 13:4; 15:19; 19:15; 20:4; 26:14-16).

Daily Bible Verse - 6/20/2007 - Acts 4:32

Today's Verse

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.
(NIV)

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
(KJV)

And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them.
(NASB)

Acts 4:32

Commentary

Believers understood that all they had belonged to God, and therefore when a brother or sister had a need those who could meet it were obligated to do so (cf. James 2:15, 16; 1 John 3:17). The method was to give the money to the apostles who would distribute it (vv. 35, 37).

MacArthur, John Jr: The MacArthur Study Bible. electronic ed. Nashville : Word Pub., 1997, c1997, S. Ac 4:32

Did you know?

The early believers expressed the reality of their common life in Christ by practicing a community of goods. Instead of selfishly holding on to personal possessions, they looked upon their property as belonging to all the fellowship. Whenever there was a need, they would sell lands or houses and bring the proceeds to the apostles for distribution. It is important to see that they distributed whenever a need arose; it was not an arbitrary equal division at one particular time.

Daily Bible Verse - 6/19/2007 - 1 Timothy 6:7-8

Today's Verse

For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. (NIV)

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
(KJV)

For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. (NASB)

1 Timothy 6:7-8

Commentary

having food and clothing .. be content. The basic necessities of life are what ought to make Christians content. Paul does not condemn having possessions, as long as God graciously provides them (v. 17). He does, however, condemn a self-indulgent desire for money, which results from discontentment.

MacArthur, John Jr: The MacArthur Study Bible. electronic ed. Nashville : Word Pub., 1997, c1997, S. 1 Ti 6:8

Did you know?

Sixteen of the thirty-nine parables of Jesus deal with wealth.

In Scripture, more references are made to money than salvation. Jesus dealt with money because money matters to people. Material wealth can be a blessing or a curse. The power of wealth is subtle (1 Tim. 6:10). The source of wealth is secure (Matt. 6:25, 26). The temptation of wealth is spending (James 4:3). The strategy of wealth is saving (Matt. 25:27). The purpose of wealth is sharing (Acts 20:35).

The Bible teaches that wealth comes from God and will be returned to Him. Wealth should bring praise to God. At times, God chooses to bless His children with wealth. Abraham, Isaac, Solomon, and even Job received wealth as a blessing from God (Gen. 13:2; 26:12-14; 1 Kin. 3:13; Job 42:12).

Daily Bible Verse - 6/18/2007 - 1 Timothy 6:10

Today's Verse

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (NIV)

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
(KJV)

For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
(NASB)

1 Timothy 6:10

Commentary

Paul ridicules the idea that God is in the business of dispensing material gain in exchange for spiritual cooperation (1 Tim. 6:5). That launches him into a discussion of money that modern believers would do well to study carefully, given the emphasis on money in our culture.

Paul warns us strongly against "the love of money" (1 Tim. 6:10). But let's be sure we interpret his words correctly. He does not say that money itself is evil. Neither does he say that money is the fundamental root of evil, or that money lies at the root of every evil. Rather, the love of money (something inside people, not money itself) can be a root (but not the only root) of all kinds of evil (but not of all evil).

But don't let those qualifications soften the blow: people who love money are vulnerable to all kinds of evil, the worst of which, Paul points out, is straying from the faith. Given this danger, believers should avoid greed.

Just as a father has compassion on his children,

Psalm 103:13

Commentary

Someone has said that "man's weakness appeals to God's compassion." Just as a human father watches with loving understanding as his little fellow struggles with some man-sized load, so the Lord looks down in pity on us in our weakness. He knows what we are-that we are made of dust-that we are frail and helpless. Too often we forget what God remembers-that we are dust. This leads to pride, self-confidence, independence and breakdowns.

In the pagan world of Paul's day, and even in many Jewish households, most fathers ruled their families with rigid and domineering authority. Daily Bible Verse - 6/15/2007 - 1 Timothy 5:8

Today's Verse

If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (NIV)

But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
(KJV)

But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
(NASB)

1 Timothy 5:8

Commentary

The seriousness of failing to provide for one's own relatives, and especially for those of one's own immediate household, is emphasized here. It constitutes a denial of the faith. The Christian faith consistently maintains that those who are true believers should care for one another. When a Christian fails to do this, he denies by his actions the very truths which Christianity teaches. Such a person is worse than an unbeliever for the simple reason that many unbelievers show loving care for their own relatives. Also, a Christian can thus bring reproach on the name of the Lord in a way that an unbeliever cannot do.

Commentary

The idea as it is expressed is wonderful: God is my strong song. That is, a person of faith may regard the living, omnipotent God as the reason for singing!

Yet God surprised them with His deliverance! The words of the first half of this verse are quoted in Ps. 118:14; Is. 12:2.

I will praise Him: There are numerous words for praise in the Bible. But the Hebrew verb here (nawรข) is unique; it means "to bring God beauty." By the sacrifices of one's lips (Heb. 13:15), people of all ages can bring beauty to the One who created all that is beautiful.

Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding,
Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check,
Otherwise they will not come near to you.
(NASB)

Psalm 32:8-9

Commentary

The speaker changes. The Lord "comes into the psalm" to instruct the people. He exhorts the people not to be like a horse that will not go where its rider wants it to go; it has to be disciplined because it is stubborn. God does not want to muzzle or bridle His people like a horse. He expects His servants to respond promptly to Him of their own accord.

Daily Bible Verse - 6/10/2007 - Matthew 20:28

Today's Verse

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (NIV)

Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (KJV)

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. (NASB)

Matthew 20:28

Commentary

to give His life a ransom for many. The word translated "for" means "in the place of," underscoring the substitutionary nature of Christ's sacrifice. A "ransom" is a price paid to redeem a slave or a prisoner. Redemption does not involve a price paid to Satan. Rather, the ransom is offered to God-to satisfy His justice and wrath against sin. The price paid was Christ's own life-as a blood atonement (cf. Lev. 17:11; Heb. 9:22). This, then, is the meaning of the cross: Christ subjected Himself to the divine punishment against sin on our behalf (cf. Is. 53:4, 5; see note on 2 Cor. 5:21). Suffering the brunt of divine wrath in the place of sinners was the "cup" He spoke of having to drink, and the baptism He was preparing to undergo (v. 22).

MacArthur, John Jr: The MacArthur Study Bible. electronic ed. Nashville : Word Pub., 1997, c1997, S. Mt 20:28

The Death of Jesus Christ

In his death on the cross, Jesus Christ fulfilled and replaced the Old Testament sacrificial system (priesthood; unchangeable). He offered up himself as the supreme, once-for-all sacrifice (slay) of atonement through the shedding (sprinkling) of his blood. By his one act of righteousness, salvation (save) as a free gift is for all who believe. In being delivered up to death (interposed; taste), Jesus accomplished several things:

· He paid the penalty of sin. In his body Jesus Christ bore (bear; nail; stripe) the sins of the world so that humanity might receive forgiveness (remission) and that their sin would be imputed to Christ's account, in order that Christ's righteousness might be reckoned to their account. He was the propitiation of God's wrath against sin (mercy seat).

· He broke (kill) the power of sin by paying the ransom price (buy, bought; deliver, deliverance, deliverer; exchange; redemption), so that believers could be free (discharged; liberty; release) from slavery to sin.

· He removed the pollution of sin by making men clean (blot out; washing) through his blood.

· He destroyed (abolish) the partition (hedge) of sin to reconcile human beings to God and put them back into a right relationship (justification) with him, so that they may never again be separated (die) from God.

Daily Bible Verse - 6/9/2007 - Matthew 28:19

Today's Verse

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (NIV)

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (KJV)

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, (NASB)

Matthew 28:19

Commentary

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations." This does not presuppose world conversion. By preaching the gospel, the disciples were to see others become learners or followers of the Savior-from every nation, tribe, people, and tongue.

Daily Bible Verse - 6/8/2007 - Proverbs 11:13

Today's Verse

A gossip betrays a confidence,
but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.
(NIV)

A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
(KJV)

He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets,
But he who is trustworthy conceals a matter.
(NASB)

Proverbs 11:13

Commentary

One of the most terrible forms of destruction by the mouth is gossip (v. 13). The divulging of a secret by a "talebearer" (lit. "one who goes about in slander") is a betrayal of trust (Prov. 16:28; 17:9; 26:20-22).

Daily Bible Verse - 6/7/2007 - John 1:10

Today's Verse

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
(NIV)

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
(KJV)

He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
(NASB)

John 1:10

Commentary

Instead of a welcome mat, Jesus had a door slammed in His face. The themes of rejection and reception (v. 12) introduced in the prologue (1:1-18) appear again and again throughout the Gospel of John.

Daily Bible Verse - 6/6/2007 - Job 38:4

Today's Verse

(God speaking)

Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
(NIV)

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
(KJV)

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding,
(NASB)

Job 38:4

Commentary

God asked Job if he participated in creation as He did. That was a crushing, humbling query with an obvious "no" answer.

MacArthur, John Jr: The MacArthur Study Bible. electronic ed. Nashville : Word Pub., 1997, c1997, S. Job 38:4

Did you know?

"Laying the Foundations of the Earth"

Public building projects in the ancient Near East were begun with religious rituals, including liturgical singing in praise of the major deities.
Kings ritually, if not actually, helped set the foundations of temples and symbolically aided the construction workers in laying walls and fastening gates.

In Job 38:4-7, the universe is pictured as a great building project by God
. All the inhabitants of heaven sing for joy as the foundations of the earth are laid (Job 38:7).

Daily Bible Verse - 6/5/2007 - Genesis 1:26

Today's Verse

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." (NIV)

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
(KJV)

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
(NASB)

Genesis 1:26

Commentary (notice the word US)

Us.. Our. The first clear indication of the triunity of God (cf. 3:22; 11:7). The very name of God, Elohim (1:1), is a plural form of El.

man.
The crowning point of creation, a living human, was made in God's image to rule creation.

Our image.
This defined man's unique relation to God. Man is a living being capable of embodying God's communicable attributes (cf. 9:6; Rom. 8:29; Col. 3:10; James 3:9). In his rational life, he was like God in that he could reason and had intellect, will, and emotion. In the moral sense, he was like God because he was good and sinless.

Blessed is the man

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

Daily Bible Verse - 6/3/2007 - Psalm 119:2

Today's Verse

Blessed are they who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart.
(NIV)

Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
(KJV)

How blessed are those who observe His testimonies,
Who seek Him with all their heart.
(NASB)

Psalm 119:2

Commentary

It is obedience to His testimonies that counts-not a reluctant, half- hearted, feet-dragging obedience, but a deep, enormous desire to please Him with the whole heart!

MacDonald, William ; Farstad, Arthur: Believer's Bible Commentary : Old and New Testaments. Nashville : Thomas Nelson, 1997, c1995, S. Ps 119:2
Did you know?

Psalm 119 is an acrostic poem.

Each paragraph of the psalm begins with a
successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This poem is the longest psalm in the Book of Psalms, as well as the longest chapter in the Bible. This hymn of praise magnifies and extols the Word of God. Various terms used for the Law of the Lord include "word" (v. 9), "testimonies" (v. 46), "precepts" (v. 28), "statutes" (v. 33), "commandments" (v. 60), and "judgments" (v. 102). Those who obey God's Law experience His blessing and are protected from sin (v. 11; see Matt. 4:1-11). God's Word stands forever (Ps. 119:89; see Is. 40:8; 1 Pet. 1:24, 25), providing light and guidance through life (see John 8:12).

Daily Bible Verse - 6/2/2007 - Proverbs 26:20

Today's Verse

Without wood a fire goes out;
without gossip a quarrel dies down.
(NIV)

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.
(KJV)

For lack of wood the fire goes out,
And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.
(NASB)

Proverbs 26:20

Commentary

Destructive words create strife and wound deeply. Inestimable damage is done by those who deliberately use their speech to harm the reputations of other people (see Prov. 25, Gossip). Just as a fire goes out when there is no fuel, a quarrel dies down when there is no gossip. Gossip spreads like a fire; it is untameable (see Prov. 11:13, note).

Daily Bible Verse - 6/1/2007 - Psalm 115:1

Today's Verse

Not to us, O LORD, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness
.(NIV)

Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.
(KJV)

Not to us, O LORD, not to us,
But to Your name give glory
Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.
(NASB)

Psalm 115:1

Commentary

People have a natural tendency to divert to themselves glory that belongs to God. This psalm redirects the glory to its proper focus, the Lord Himself.
