Today's Verse
Without wood a fire goes out;
without gossip a quarrel dies down. (NIV)
Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. (KJV)
For lack of wood the fire goes out,
And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.(NASB)
Proverbs 26:20
CommentaryDestructive words create strife and wound deeply. Inestimable damage is done by those who deliberately use their speech to harm the reputations of other people (see Prov. 25, Gossip). Just as a fire goes out when there is no fuel, a quarrel dies down when there is no gossip. Gossip spreads like a fire; it is untameable (see Prov. 11:13, note).
