Proverbs 11:22 - a beautiful woman who shows no discretion

Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.

As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

As a ring of gold in a swine's snout So is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.

Commentary

The women of Israel wore nose rings as ornaments in the same way that women wear earrings and finger rings (see Ex. 28). The swine were considered unclean animals, thus making the example of a ring of gold in a pig's nose ludicrous. A gold ring could not beautify a dirty pig. Similarly, to suppose that a woman's physical beauty can cover her lack of discretion (or moral perception) is ridiculous. Outward beauty with indiscreet conduct has no value and actually turns beauty into ugliness (see Prov. 4).

Proverbs 2:10-11 - knowledge will be pleasant to your soul

For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.

When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

Commentary

These verses stress the internalization of wisdom. The proverbs do not merely provide knowledge; they provide insight to be learned intimately and practiced.
