Psalm 46:10 - Be still, and know that I am God

NIV He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields [a] with fire.
"Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."
KJV He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
NASBHe makes wars to cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariots with fire.
"Cease striving and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
Psalm 46:10

Commentary

The voice of God rings out to all the inhabitants of the earth in accents of assurance and supremacy. "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" Every fear is stilled, every anxiety quieted. His people can relax. He is God. His cause is victorious. He is supreme among the nations, supreme over all the earth.

Psalm 46

Some Bible students believe that this psalm was written in connection with the dramatic deliverance of Jerusalem from the Assyrians (2 Kings 18-20). This song was the inspiration for Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," and it can be an inspiration to you today.
