Luke 12:34 - For where your treasure is...

NIV For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
KJV For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
NASBFor where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Luke 12:34

Commentary

In this passage Jesus has just finished describing all that God has provided for us, including the Kingdom-eternal life. He finishes up by urging them to "invest" in this Kingdom, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Notice that Jesus did not say that we should put our treasures where our own hearts lead us to. He flips that around and teaches that when we put our treasures, our earthly possessions into Kingdom investments, our hearts will follow and go there too. The Kingdom of God is a kingdom of the heart. Ask God where to invest your treasures and your heart will follow.

Luke 12:15 - Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed

NIV Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
KJV And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
NASBThen He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions."
Luke 12:15

Commentary

This year on "Black Friday" (The day-after Thanksgiving shopping spree), we saw the unfortunate death of a retail store employee when he was trampled by shoppers running to fill their selfish desires (read full story). In these verses, Jesus is addressing two brothers fighting over their inheritance. He gives them a strong warning about thinking that their possessions can give their life worth and ultimate value. Greed grips are hearts when we place material things (or anything) in the place of God and his ultimate approval and blessings in our life. Christmas should serve as the ultimate reminder that we have been given the very best God has to offer in the form of his Son!
