Matthew 4:2-4 - Man does not live on bread alone

After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

As Jesus was fasting and praying, he came directly into the path of his adversary. We are surrounded by obstacles, yet it is only when we set ourselves aside to pray, fast, and seek God's face that we become aware of all that is around us. It is in the place of prayer that we come to grips that as great as food is, we were made to be sustained by God's words. A life lacking prayer is a life lacking perspective.

Acts 13:2 - While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting...

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."

Prayer and fasting revealed the next stage of the journey for Barnabas and Saul. How many times have we made major life decisions without the counsel of the Lord? If we are willing to slow down and seek after the Lord we speed up our ability to clearly discern the next step in life. Are you able to trust that God can and will give direction? Are you willing to slow down in order to speed up?
