Song of Solomon 4:1 - How beautiful you are, my darling!

NIV How beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes behind your veil are doves.
KJV Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes within thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead.
NASB How beautiful you are, my darling,
How beautiful you are!
Your eyes are like doves behind your veil;
Song of Solomon 4:1

Commentary

Solomon lavishly praises his bride's great beauty. He uses verbal symbols of loveliness to paint a picture of the breathtaking charm of the Shulamite. Dove's eyes (2:14) are a picture of purity, innocence, and beauty (as in 1:15). The bride's veil would have covered the rest of her face, leaving only her beautiful eyes to be seen (2:14; 5:7).

Did you know?

Marriage is more than a contract that two people make for their mutual benefit. Because they make their marriage vows in God's presence and in His name, they may draw power from God to fulfill those vows. God becomes a supporting party to the marriage. New Testament writers understood that Christian marriage is created and maintained by Christ.

Proverbs 31:10-12 - A wife of noble character who can find?

NIV A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
KJV Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
NASB An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
Proverbs 31:10-12

Commentary

A virtuous or fine wife is one who is capable, diligent, worthy, and good. Her worth cannot be measured in terms of costly jewels. Her husband can have full confidence in her, with no need to fear any lack of honest gain.
