Daily Bible Verse - 2/13/2008 - 1 Corinthians 15:33

NIV Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."
KJV Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
NASB Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals."
1 Corinthians 15:33

Commentary
Evil company corrupts good habits. Paul is referring to the false teachers who had come into the church at Corinth, denying the resurrection.

The Christians should realize that it is impossible to associate with evil people or evil teachings without being corrupted by them. Evil doctrine inevitably has an effect on one's life. False teachings do not lead to holiness.

Resurrection Teachings

Some Corinthians were confused about the resurrection of Jesus and what it has to do with them. Some apparently didn't believe that bodies will be resurrected. Instead, these people have adopted the Greek understanding that only the soul is immortal. Paul teaches that Jesus-soul and glorified body-were both resurrected and witnessed by hundreds.
Paul reveals that some day, in an instant, "our dead and decaying bodies will be changed into bodies that won't die." Our former bodies made from dust will become like that of "the one who came from heaven." When this happens, Paul says, the prophecies of Isaiah and Hosea will be fulfilled, and people will praise God saying, "Death has lost the battle! Where is its victory? Where is its sting?" (Isaiah 25:8; Hosea 13:14).

Daily Bible Verse - 2/12/2008 - Proverbs 5:21-22

NIV For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD,
and he examines all his paths.

The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him;
the cords of his sin hold him fast.

KJV For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
NASB For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the LORD,
And He watches all his paths.
His own iniquities will capture the wicked,
And he will be held with the cords of his sin.
Proverbs 5:21-22

Commentary
God ponders all the paths (lit. "habits") of the wicked. The course of life chosen by the wicked entraps in ignorance and sin and leads to death. Judgment is of the Lord. People may talk about being "free" to do whatever they feel like doing, but in reality sin takes away all freedom.

Thomas Nelson, I. (1997, c1995). Woman's study Bible . (Pr 5:21). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.

The Lord sees all that man does and in mercy withholds immediate judgment, allowing the sinner time to repent or to be caught in his own sin (cf. Num. 32:23; Pss. 7:15, 16; 57:6; Prov. 1:17; Gal. 6:7, 8). Note the example of Haman (Esth. 5:9-14; 7:1-10).
