Daily Bible Verse - 2/2/2008 - John 20:30-31

NIV Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
KJV And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
NASB Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
John 20:30-31

Commentary
Not all the miracles performed by Jesus are recorded in John's Gospel. The Holy Spirit selected those signs which would best serve His purpose.
Here we have John's object in writing the book. It was so that his readers may believe that Jesus is the true Messiah and the Son of God. Believing, they will have eternal life in His name. Have you believed?

Did you know?
John, probably written last of the four Gospels, does not repeat most of stories that have been circulating for decades. Instead, it focuses on Jesus' deity, using carefully selected miracles and teachings that propel this theme.

Daily Bible Verse - 2/1/2008 - John 10:28-29

NIV I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.
KJV And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
NASB and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand."
John 10:28-29

Commentary
No stronger passage in the OT or NT exists for the absolute, eternal security of every true Christian.

MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997). The MacArthur Study Bible (electronic ed.) (Jn 10:28). Nashville: Word Pub.

We live a Christian life because we are Christians. We desire to live a holy life, not out of fear of losing our salvation, but out of gratitude to the One who died for us. The doctrine of eternal security does not encourage careless living, but rather is a strong motive for holy living.
