A wise son brings joy to his father,
but a foolish man despises his mother.

Commentary

This proverb is like the fifth commandment: "Honor your father and your mother" (Ex. 20:12; Deut. 5:16). Honoring and listening to parents is a favorite theme of Solomon's proverbs; this collection begins with the same exhortation (10:1).
