Isaiah 12:2 - God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid

Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

Commentary

God is my salvation: This psalm of redemption is based on the first psalm of redemption in Exodus (Ex. 15:2; Ps. 118:14). Yah, the Lord, by its repetition, emphasizes that Israel's covenant-keeping God-and not the nations-brings salvation (26:4). My strength and song may be rephrased as "my strong song" or "my song of strength" (Ex. 15:2).

Isaiah 26:3-4 - Rock of Ages

You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.

Commentary

A fixed disposition of trust in the Lord brings a peace that the wicked can never know (48:22; 57:21). Such reliance precludes double mindedness (James 1:6-8) and serving two masters (Matt. 6:24).

Rock of Ages

"everlasting strength" in this verse may be translated literally as the expression "the Rock of Ages." It was from this expression that Augustus Toplady got the idea for one of the greatest hymns in the English language, "Rock of Ages" while seeking shelter in a cleft in a rocky crag during a violent thunderstorm.
