Daily Bible Verse - 9/8/2007 - Romans 6:10-11

The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:10-11

Commentary
6:10 He died to sin. Christ died to sin in two senses: 1) in regard to sin's penalty-He met its legal demands upon the sinner; and 2) in regard to sin's power-forever breaking its power over those who belong to Him. And His death will never need repeating (Heb. 7:26, 27; 9:12, 28; 10:10; cf. 1 Pet. 3:18). Paul's point is that believers have died to sin in the same way. He lives to God. For God's glory.

"Alive to God"
The most vivid illustration of Romans 6 is Lazarus (John 11). Jesus raised him from the dead and then said, "Loose him, and let him go" (John 11:44). Lazarus left the grave, got rid of the graveclothes, and began a new life (Col. 3:1ff.). God's people are both "dead" and "alive" (v. 11) and by faith must live accordingly.

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

Commentary
boast except in the cross. The Gr. word for "boast" is a basic expression of praise, unlike the Eng. word, which necessarily includes the aspect of pride. Paul glories and rejoices in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ (cf. Rom. 8:1-3; 1 Cor. 2:2; 1 Pet. 2:24). the world. The evil, Satanic system (see notes on 1 John 2:15, 16; 5:19). crucified to me, and I to the world. The world is spiritually dead to believers, and they are dead to the world (see notes on 2:20; Rom. 6:2-10; 1 John 5:4, 5; cf. Phil. 3:20, 21).
