Luke 17:10 - We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty

So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.' "

So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

"So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'"

Commentary

Disciples are bondslaves of the Lord Jesus Christ. They belong to Him-spirit, soul, and body. In the light of Calvary, nothing they can ever do for the Savior is sufficient to recompense Him for what He has done. So after the disciple has done everything that he has been commanded in the NT, he must still admit that he is an unprofitable servant who has only done what was his duty to do.

Deuteronomy 5:33 - Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you

Commentary

God's people have three responsibilities when it comes to His commandments: hear them, learn them, and do them (v. 1). When we read the Word of God, we should hear the voice of God as the Spirit speaks to us personally. We must allow the Spirit to teach us God's truth and then empower us to obey it. The blessing comes in the living of the Word and not in the learning (James 1:21-25).
