Isaiah 55:10-11 - I send my Word out, and it accomplishes all I want it to

NIV 10 As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
KJV 10For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

NASB 10For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
And do not return there without watering the earth
And making it bear and sprout,
And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
11So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth;
It will not return to Me empty,
Without accomplishing what I desire,
And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:10-11

Commentary

God's word is similar to rainfall; it produces fruit (Ps. 147:15-20). Just as water enlivens and strengthens a withering rose, God's word produces life in the hearts of sinners.

Hosea 6:3 - As surely as the sun rises, He will appear

NIV Let us acknowledge the LORD;
let us press on to acknowledge him.
As surely as the sun rises,
he will appear;
he will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains that water the earth.
KJV Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
NASB So let us know, let us press on to know the LORD
His going forth is as certain as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the rain,
Like the spring rain watering the earth.
Hosea 6:3

Commentary

Like the call to return (v. 1), the call to true knowledge of the Lord is central to Hosea's message (2:8, 20; 4:1, 6; 5:4; 6:6). "as the morning / like the rain" - These similes compare God's reliability to the recurrent events of nature.

Did you know?

Hosea's name, in Hebrew, is almost identical to the names of Jesus and Joshua. All three mean "God saves." Hosea saves his wife from slavery, Joshua saves Israel from defeat, and Jesus saves the world from sin.
