Today's Verse

(God speaking)

Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
(NIV)

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
(KJV)

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding,
(NASB)

Job 38:4

Commentary

God asked Job if he participated in creation as He did. That was a crushing, humbling query with an obvious "no" answer.

"Laying the Foundations of the Earth"

Public building projects in the ancient Near East were begun with religious rituals, including liturgical singing in praise of the major deities.
Kings ritually, if not actually, helped set the foundations of temples and symbolically aided the construction workers in laying walls and fastening gates.

In Job 38:4-7, the universe is pictured as a great building project by God
. All the inhabitants of heaven sing for joy as the foundations of the earth are laid (Job 38:7).

Daily Bible Verse - 6/5/2007 - Genesis 1:26

Today's Verse

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." (NIV)

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
(KJV)

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
(NASB)

Genesis 1:26

Commentary (notice the word US)

Us.. Our. The first clear indication of the triunity of God (cf. 3:22; 11:7). The very name of God, Elohim (1:1), is a plural form of El.

man.
The crowning point of creation, a living human, was made in God's image to rule creation.

Our image.
This defined man's unique relation to God. Man is a living being capable of embodying God's communicable attributes (cf. 9:6; Rom. 8:29; Col. 3:10; James 3:9). In his rational life, he was like God in that he could reason and had intellect, will, and emotion. In the moral sense, he was like God because he was good and sinless.

Just as God is a Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), so man is a tripartite being (spirit, soul, and body). In contrast to animals, man is a worshiper, an articulate communicator, and a creator.
