Daily Bible Verse - 5/29/2007 - Joshua 1:9

Today's Verse

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. (NASB)

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.
(NIV)

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. (KJV)

Joshua 1:9

Commentary

Three times Joshua is told by the Lord to be strong and very courageous (vv. 6, 7, 9). The size and duration of the task ahead, the pressures of leading such an obstinate people, and the absence of his spiritual mentor, Moses, were perhaps heavy on Joshua's mind at this time. But the Lord was not calling him without enabling him. There were good reasons for Joshua to be strong: God's promise (vv. 5, 6), a sure victory; God's Word (vv. 7, 8), a safe guide; God's presence (v. 9), a sustaining power.

Did you know?

Joshua not only was a great military leader, but he was also Israel's spiritual leader. Joshua was Moses' faithful assistant during the Exodus and succeeded him as Israel's leader after Moses died.

Joshua's military strategy is studied in modern war colleges. He first thrust deep into Canaan, dividing the territory, and then dealt separately with southern and northern coalitions of Canaanite kings.

During his years as commander of God's hosts, and as long as he lived, the Israelites remained faithful to the Lord.

Daily Bible Verse - 5/28/2007 - John 15:13

Today's Verse

Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. (NASB)

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
(NIV)

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (KJV)

- John 15:13

Commentary

This is a reference to the supreme evidence and expression of Jesus' love (v. 12), His sacrificial death upon the cross. Christians are called to exemplify the same kind of sacrificial giving toward one another, even if such sacrifice involves the laying down of one's own life in imitation of Christ's example (cf. 1 John 3:16).
