Daily Bible Verse - 1/8/2008 - Proverbs 3:7-8

NIV Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.
KJV Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
NASB Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your body
And refreshment to your bones.
Proverbs 3:7-8

Commentary
Solomon again turned to the need for the young man to learn from his instruction (3:1; see 2:1). Strict adherence to biblical truth will lead to a long, peaceful life (3:2), and a commitment to its principles (3:3; see Deut. 6:8; 11:18) will cause one to enjoy favor with both God and man (Prov. 3:4).

"wise in your own eyes"
The phrase summarizes the idea that the human mind with its intellect and reason is independently capable of reaching a true understanding of reality, without any dependence upon God's revelation.
